Do You Still Need a Traditional Phone Line for Your Business?

You do not still need a traditional phone line for your business. The introduction of internet-based phone service and fiber internet have given alternative communication solutions that offer more features and functions than traditional phone lines and traditional phone services.

Communications technology has advanced quickly over the past few years. Traditional phone lines now have a fair amount of competition with new and seemingly improved systems like VoIP (voice over internet protocol), digital phone lines and even the advancement of smartphones. The one thing that remains true over the years is that businesses need tools to make calls to function.

Businesses need to be able to communicate efficiently, and they also need to be sure that whatever communication methods they are opting for are reliable. For this reason, many gravitate towards new technologies, that tend to have more features to offer. Regardless, despite there being a move towards technology that connects using the internet, like hosted phone systems, traditional phone lines are very far from disappearing from the business world. So, do you still need a traditional phone line for your business?

A Traditional Phone Line is Still Useful in Business:

With newer communication technologies in the market, traditional telephony has been taken away from the spotlight for businesses. This doesn’t mean they aren’t useful anymore. On the other hand, a traditional phone line can still be the best option for any business whose needs fit this communication method is the best. Traditional phone lines were and still are the go-to system for both smaller businesses and huge corporations for a reason.

For some cases, digital or over the internet alternatives will lack the functions that a traditional phone line can provide. For example, companies with weaker internet connections would benefit from using landlines more than hosted phone systems. Furthermore, companies that are used to more traditional methods and feel like the change would be too much to take on for their teams, tend to prefer comfort and keep traditional phone lines.

Will Landlines Be Reliable for Long?

Unfortunately, no. Like most things communications move in trends and trends seem to be moving towards cloud-based phone systems for businesses of all sizes. This is because they are the most reliable option. Cloud- based phones are designed to work in any circumstances, because all they need is an internet connection, and then calls can be made from any device. With a move towards more remote and hybrid work modalities more and more businesses are looking to have phone systems that can move with their employees.

Traditional vs Cloud Phones:

Features: A traditional phone line will come with useful features such as caller ID, voicemail, three-way calling and call forwarding. Cloud phones on the other hand, will have more future-forward features such as video calling, phone applications, call management, etc.

Reliability: Traditional phone lines connect to power sources, so if you have electricity the line should be up and working, however these systems are connected to physical equipment that can’t be moved from a specific location. Cloud phones on the other hand can be used on any device that is internet connected, so you can take it with you wherever you go. If there’s internet available, you’ll have the option to be connected.

Prices: Traditional phone lines remain affordable, and most companies will offer discounts or bundle packages depending on the number of lines acquired. Cloud systems are paid on a monthly fee basis, and costs are also fairly affordable depending on the add-on features that you opt for. The one thing that can make landlines a bit more expensive is the physical equipment that is needed, and installation costs.

More features than Traditional Phones?

Hosted telephony, unlike a traditional phone line, is packed full of modern features that are meant to make your communications better. Furthermore, new and improved features are added to these systems over the years as a response to customer needs and demands, so with a hosted phone system your business won’t be left behind. Some of these features include:

  • Simple Call Management
  • Full-Featured Call Center Module
  • Electronic Faxing Capabilities
  • Audio Conferencing
  • Virtual Auto Attendants for Every Occasion
  • Top-Tier Software Integrations

So, Does My Business Need a Traditional Phone Line?

Not necessarily! But if you already have a traditional phone line and are happy with it or would prefer one over a cloud phone system that’s totally fine! Keep in mind that traditional landlines are slowly being phased out, and you may have to update your system eventually.
